Servers

Below are descriptions of the various servers the Variety Network has available for use. The page is broken up into sections. To move between the various sections, search for heading levels of two.

TeamTalk

TeamTalk is a server used for voice chatting. the bandwidth usage can be either high or low, so it can be ideal for those with slower internet connections. The options for the server make it a very diverse voice chatting system.
You can download the latest windows TeamTalk client that is compatible with our TeamTalk server at www.bearware.dk.
This client has been tested and successfully run on Windows XP and Windows 7. It should also work on Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Windows Vista. Compatibility with other operating systems is currently unknown.
There are also clients available for Linux and Mac OS X on the page given above.

Our TeamTalk server address is the same as the website address. However, please use the address below if possible:
tt.vrnw.org
We ask that you use the address above as it will remain the same, even in the event of a change in the TeamTalk server's location.
The port numbers are the defaults, but are listed for your convenience.

  • TCP: 10333
  • UDP: 10333

IRC

An IRC server is available for you to use, should you wish to speak with anyone on our network.
You can download MIRC 6.35, a client we recommend for our IRC server.

Please note that should you wish to connect to the IRC server via the ssl port, and you are using MIRC6.35, you will need to download the ssl package.

Users that strictly rely on screenreader use can download MIRC With Speech 0.9.
Download MIRC With Speech 0.9 here.
MIRC With Speech comes with the OpenSSL package pre-installed, so you need not worry about downloading it if you are using MIRC With Speech.
MIRC With Speech 0.9 employs the use of MIRC 6.35, and both clients should work with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7

Please note that MIRC has been tested for use on Windows XP. Compatibility with other operating systems is unknown.

We ask that you use the address above as it will remain the same, even in the event of a change in the IRC server's location.
The port numbers for the IRC server are as follows:

  • Non-secure ports: 6660-6669
  • Secure port utalizing SSL: 6697

Icecast

The icecast server will be used for audio broadcasts on occasion.
To listen to our icecast server, we recommend a media player called Winamp.

Some broadcasts are done using mp3pro. Mp3pro is a version of mp3 that allows higher qualities at lower file formats.

If you wish to broadcast, please contact the Variety Network administrator. Please include your contact information, your expected broadcasting time, length, and a description of the subject matter you wish to broadcast. At the moment, we are not a licensed server, so please don't broadcast any copyrighted materials. If you require help setting up your broadcasting software, we will provide technical support.
Shoutcast users can use the shoutcast plugin with Winamp if they desire.

The address for the icecast server is the same address used for the web site, but please use the address below if possible:
icecast.vrnw.org:8000
We ask that you use the address above as it will remain the same, even in the event of a change in the Icecast server's location.
The icecast server is located on port 8000.

No one is currently broadcasting on the Variety Network icecast server using all checked mountpoints.
